Characteristics of Trust Type and Its Impact on Institution Trust : Comparison of Korea and Japan. Korean Review of Public Administration, 43(4) : 105-128.

This study examines the characteristics of trust type and its impact on institution trust of Korea and Japan. For the purpose of this study, it analyzes what are the dominant types of trust in Korea and Japan, how these types of trust are developed, and what are the results of the types of trust. This study questions Fukuyama's advocacy that Japan is high trust society, while Korea is low trust society. More than 1,400 surveys are used for data in Korea and Japan. This research finds that ① generally, Korean shows higher private and hierarchical trust than Japanese, while Japanese answers higher general trust than Korean, however, ② Japanese also shows high private trust, on the other hand, Japanese shows lower civil society trust than Korean, ③ in Korea, trust of weak-tie type, such as general trust and civil society trust, has an positive influence on institution trust. From this results, it is confirmed that on the one hand, Korean trust structure shows a weakness for open society, on the other hand, trust of weak-tie type is necessary to develop institution trust in Korea.
