Family Social Capital and Civil Participation : Cases of Korea and Japan

This study examines the impact of family social capital on group participation and political participation. Since there are several types of group participation and political participation, there are various relationships between family social capital and civil participation. That is, social capital and network can be typed as strong tie and weak tie, hierarchical and horizontal network, group and personal trust, homogeneous and heterogeneous group. We can examine that some of family social capital factors have an influence on some types of group and political participation. 1,985 surveys are used for data in three cities of Korea and Japan respectively. This research finds following results. First, various group and political participation are affected by various factors of family social capital. Second, there are some similarity and disparity between Korea and Japan on the relationship between family social capital and civil participation. From these results, this paper discusses research implications for further research.
