Social Network's Influence on Associational Participation and Political Activity : Gender Effect in Korea and China

This study focuses on the hypotheses that there are differences on the process of building networks according to gender and to female workers and housewives, and that their networks affect associational participation and political activities. Lin(2000) explains that inequality in different types of social capital contributes to social inequality, such as socioeconomic achievements and quality of life. Social groups have different access to social network because fo their advantaged or disadvantaged structural positions and associated social networks. More than 2,000 surveys are used for data in three main cities of Korea and about 1,500 surveys in three cities of China. This research finds following results. First, there are different levels of social networks according to gender and countries. Second, there are different types of associational participation and political activities according to gender and countries. Third, different types of social networks building in home, workplace, and society affect different types of associational participation and political activities. From these results, this paper discusses research implications for further research.
